Why vertical tutoring?
- Vertical tutoring allows excellent peer role modelling and student leadership. This supports Year 12 students as they navigate the transition from Year 11 into post-16 Wren Six study.
- To support the development of a community across Year 12 and Year 13 and ensure cohesion within Wren Six.
- Vertical tutoring allows us to provide excellent support to students every day ensuring that the tutor programme is five days a week. This brings academic and pastoral benefits to our community.
- Vertical tutoring is cited as being a key factor in development of student skills, character and belonging helping students to form an identity connected to our community.

Societies
Our ‘Societies’ are designed for students to develop their ability to co-learn, debate, and discuss with peers. The academic reading that tutees complete will inform the society they are a part of. Throughout the academic year, students will take part in more than one society. The society is a group discussion with tutees who study the same subject as each other. It will link to academic reading and their specification. It will be led by Year 13 students who might suggest a model, theory or concept to debate and discuss the following week, informing students what to direct their research and guided reading to that week. Tutees may move through each of their subjects as the year progresses, completing one every term.
- Week 1: Tutor led introduction to ‘Societies’, logistics and finding your first ’Society’
- Week 2: Tutor role modelling of a ‘Society’ discussion
- Week 3: Y13 lead a discussion around “What I wish I had known last year?”
- Week 4: Y13 lead – Topic setting until Christmas
- Week 5 onwards: Topic discussions as outlined in week four.
Tutor Buddy
Every Year 12 student will be assigned a buddy from within their tutor group, who will provide peer support. This role will include:
- A regular buddy check-in
- Support in navigating the site and expectations in the early days
- Become a point of contact if they have a question which can be answered by a peer
- Guide and support their buddy to become a successful Wren Six student
- Become a critical friend with academic learning
