Mathematics
Our Vision
The Mathematics Department aims to provide a curriculum which:
- exposes learners to a range of mathematical processes;
- allows learners to develop core numeracy skills through abstract thinking;
- creates opportunities for students to become independent learners and problem solvers;
- nurtures curiosity with investigative learning;
- enables learners to access the world in greater depth.
Across Years 7, 8 and 9, we cover all areas of the National Curriculum. Within KS3 lessons, we concentrate on developing numerical fluency and reasoning skills in the key mathematical areas of number, algebra, geometry, ratio and proportion, and statistics. In addition, we take part in the UKMT Maths Challenges three times a year with keen student uptake, and which has resulted in some significant successes.
Using the White Rose Maths as the basis of our schemes of learning which supports the structure of Mastery teaching in all groups, our students are taught in mixed ability settings which allows all to have an equal opportunity of access to the curriculum. Within the mixed ability setting, scaffolding and challenge work are embedded to support learners of all abilities to aim high and reach their potential at GCSE and beyond.
At KS4 we study the AQA GCSE Mathematics course which results in students sitting either the Foundation or Higher Tier papers: in both pathways, students can achieve a good pass.
At Key Stage 5 we offer both A Level Maths and Core Maths courses. A Level maths is taught using the AQA specification and covers pure maths, statistics, and mechanics. For our Core Maths course, we follow AQA Level 3 Mathematical Studies specification over the two years of sixth form teaching. This course looks at applying maths to real life scenarios and is suggested to compliment and support mathematical content in many other subjects including; psychology, biology, and geography.
